Volodymyr Holubnychy passed away on 16th August, aged 85. Volodymyr Stepanovych Holubnychy (1936-2021) was a Ukrainian race walker, who competed for the Soviet Union. He dominated the 20 km Race Walking in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1955, Holubnychy broke Race Walking World Record of 20 km (1h 30m 36s). In 1959, he broke Race Walking World Record of 20 km (1h 27m 04s). In 1960 Olympic Games, he won the gold medal in the 20 km of Race Walking. In 1968 Olympic Games, he also won the gold medal in the 20 km of Race Walking. In 1974 European Championships, he won the gold medal in the 20 km of Race Walking. Aidan de Brune (England, 1874-Australia, 1946) was a walker and the first one to walk around Australia. De Brune was born Herbert Charles Cull in London, England and started his professional life as a printer. He married Ethel Elizabeth Crofts in 1907 and his son, Lionel, was born in 1909. In 1910, de Brune went to Australia, arriving in Fremantle, Western Australia on 23 May 1910. His wife and child followed him and arrived in Albany, Western Australia on 26 November 1910. In 1912, de Brune's wife and son returned to England. He remained in Australia for the rest of his life. Since 1920 to 1921, he walked across Australia (Fremantle-Sydney) in 90 days. He broke the Across Australia World Record, Across South Australia-New South Wales World Record, Across South Australia-Victoria World Record, Across Victoria-New South Wales World Record, Across Western Australia-South Australia World Record, Across Western Australia-Victoria World Record, Across Western Australia-New South Wales World Record, etc. Since 1921 to 1924, he walked 16.190 km around Australia (Sydney-Sydney) in 897 days. He broke the Around Australia World Record. Aidan de Brune was also a journalist and author. Edward Payson Weston (1839-1929) was a North American walker, who was largely responsible for the rise in popularity of the sport in the 1860s and 1870s. Weston broke several Across World Records: Across USA (1909 and 1910), Across New York-California (1909), Across California-New York (1910), etc. As a teenager, Edward Payson Weston published books about his father's trips to the California Gold Rush and to the Azores, and he also published a novel written by his mother Maria Gaines in 1859. He first received attention as a notable walker in 1861, when he walked 478 miles (769 km) from Boston, Massachusetts to Washington, D.C. in 10 days and 10 hours. In 1867, Weston walked from Portland, Maine to Chicago, Illinois covering over 1.200 miles (2.134 km) in 25 days. In 1869, he walked 1.058 miles (1.703 km) through snow-covered New England in 30 days. In 1874, Weston walked 500 miles in 6 days. In 1907, at the age of 68, Weston repeated his Portland to Chicago walk of 1867, beating his own time by over 24 hours. In 1909, he walked 3.895 miles (6.268 km), from New York to San Francisco, California in 121 days. In 1910, he walked 3.500 miles (5.632 km), from Santa Monica, Los Angeles to New York, in 90 days. His last great journey was in 1913, when he walked 1.546 miles (2.488 km) from New York to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 51 days. Edward Payson Weston was severely injured when he was struck by a New York City taxicab in 1927, and never walked again. He died in his sleep two years later. 05-2021

Paul Nihill (1939-2020) passed away on 14th December, aged 81. He competed in the 50 km event at the 1964, 1968 and 1972 Olympic Games and won a silver medal in 1964. In 1969 European Championships, he won the gold medal in the 20 km Race Walking. In 1971 European Championships, he also won the silver medal in the 20 km Race Walking. Ernesto Canto (1959-2020) died at 61 years of age. The young Ernesto Canto was inspired by the feat of ‘Sergeant’ José Pedraza who won the silver medal at the 1968 Olympic Games. In 1983 World Championships, Canto won the gold medal in the 20 km of Race Walking. In 1984 Olympic Games, he won the gold medal in the 20 km of Race Walking. In 1987 World Indoor Championships, he also won the bronze medal in the 5 km of Race Walking. In the last years of his life, Ernesto Canto he dedicated himself to private businesses and to give lectures. Canto died in 2020 at the age of 61 from pancreatic and liver cancer. 12-2020
Jordi Llopart (1952-2020) passed away on 11 November 2020 from a heart attack. In 1978 European Championships, he won the gold medal in the 50 km of Race Walking. In 1980 Olympic Games, he also won the silver medal in the 20 km Race Walking. In 1990s, Llopart continued as a coach. In 2010s, Jordi Llopart founded Fit Walking in Spain. Moore was among the first generation of Soviet female engineers after the Russian Revolution. In 1932, she became the Soviet Union's long-distance motorcycle champion. Barbara Moore immigrated to Great Britain in 1939, marrying an art teacher, Harry Moore. They later separated. In 1959, she walked 600 km, from Edinburgh to London, in 7 days. She broke the Across Great Britain World Record and Across England-Scotland World Record. In early 1960, she walked 1.400 km, from John o' Groats to Land's End, in 23 days. In 1960, Barbara Moore also walked 5.450 km, from San Francisco to New York, in 86 days. She broke the Across USA World Record and the Across California-New York World Record.
