Daniel O’Leary (1841-1933) was an Irish walker, who was largely responsible for the rise in popularity of the sport in the 1870s.
Daniel O’Leary broke several World Records: 6 Days (1875), 6 Days (1877), etc.
A native of Ireland, O’Leary came to the USA when he was 19 years old.
In 1875, Daniel O’Leary walked 810 km in 6 Days of Chicago.
In 1877, he also walked 836,4 km in 6 Days of London.
In 1907, Daniel O’Leary walked 1.000 miles in 1.000 hours.
O’Leary twice beat Edward Payson Weston in 6 Days matches.
His frequent appearances in the New York metropolitan area excited great public interest.
In an interview once in Brooklyn he said: “I will get my full growth when I am 100 and will be up and going until I am 110. After that I am making no promises".
He was 91 years old when he died at the Glendale Sanatorium, Los Angeles on 29 May 1933 after a long illness.
