In 1996 Olympic Games, he won the gold medal in the 20 km of Race Walking. Following his win, he walked 459 km, from Quito's Franciscan cathedral to his hometown of Cuenca.
In 1999 World Championships, Jefferson Pérez won the silver medal in the 20 km of Race Walking.
In 2003 World Championships, he also won the gold medal in the 20 km of Race Walking. In 2003, Pérez broke 20 km Race Walking World Record with the time of 1h 17m 21s.
In 2005 and 2007 World Championships, Pérez won the gold medal in the 20 km of Race Walking.
