Mikaelsson competed domestically in running, skiing, orienteering, handball and football.
His international Race Walking career began with a win at the 1937 English Championships, but was then interrupted by World War II.
In 1946 European Championships, Mikaelsson won the gold medal in the 10 km Race Walking.
In 1948 Olympic Games, he won the gold medal in the 10 km Race Walking.
In 1952 Olympic Games, he also won the gold medal in the 10 km Race Walking.
Mikaelsson broke several Race Walking World Records.
In 1937, Mikaelsson broke the 20 km Race Walking World Record (1h 32m 12s).
In 1946, he also broke the 20 km Race Walking World Record (1h 31m 44s).
In 1965, Mikaelsson emigrated to the USA.
