Between 1987 and 1994, Shchennikov won several gold medals in World and European Indoor Championships.
In 1988, Shchennikov also broke the 20 km Race Walking World Record.
In 1991 and 1997 World Championships, Shchennikov won the silver medal in the 20 km Race Walking.
In 1994 European Championships, he won the gold medal in the 20 km Race Walking.
In 1996 Olympic Games, he won the silver medal in the 50 km Race Walking.
