Ernesto Canto (1959-2020) died at 61 years of age. The young Ernesto Canto was inspired by the feat of ‘Sergeant’ José Pedraza who won the silver medal at the 1968 Olympic Games. In 1983 World Championships, Canto won the gold medal in the 20 km of Race Walking. In 1984 Olympic Games, he won the gold medal in the 20 km of Race Walking. In 1987 World Indoor Championships, he also won the bronze medal in the 5 km of Race Walking. In the last years of his life, Ernesto Canto he dedicated himself to private businesses and to give lectures. Canto died in 2020 at the age of 61 from pancreatic and liver cancer.
