In 2019, Ken Matthews (1934-2019) died at the age of 84. Matthews leaves his son, Ian, 52, and three grandchildren, Daniel, 23, Georgia, 21, and Joel, 14. Ian said: “The family is devastated by his sudden death but his fantastic achievements will never be forgotten and his historic victory in Tokyo will be chronicled in the record books in perpetuity”. Kenneth Matthews was a British race walker, who won the Olympic (1964) and European (1962) titles in the 20 km Race Walking. He took part in the 1960 Olympic Games, but failed to finish the 20 km race. In 1962 European Championships, he won the gold medal in the 20 km of Race Walking.
