Hartwig Gauder passed away on 22 April 2020 from a heart attack. Gauder (1954) was a West German race walker who won the 50 km Race Walking at the 1980 Olympic Games. In 1981 European Indoor Championships, he won the gold medal in the 5 km of Race Walking. In 1986 European Championships, he won the gold medal in the 50 km of Race Walking. In 1987 World Championships, he also won the gold medal in the 50 km of Race Walking. In 1988 Olympic Games, he won the bronze medal in the 50 km of Race Walking. In 1990 European Championships and 1991 World Championships, Hartwig Gauder also won the bronze medal in the 50 km of Race Walking. In 1996, Gauder started suffering from a virus infection of his heart. After living with an artificial heart for several months, he received a heart transplant. Hartwig Gauder died while undergoing dialysis on 22 April 2020, aged 65. The cause of death was a heart attack complicated by kidney failure. 04-2020
Ann Sayer passed away on 15 April 2020 from Coronavirus COVID-19. In 1977, she walked 100 miles in Dutch 100 Miles race at St. Oedenrode (21 hours and 46 minutes). She was the first British ‘Continental Centurion’ and also the first British female Centurion. In 1980, she walked from Land's End to John o' Groats (1.400 km) in 13 days and 18 hours. She broke the Across Great Britain World Record and Across England-Scotland World Record. Ann also represented Great Britain in several 24 hour races in France. 03-2020
In February 03-29, 2020, Jesús García Juanes walked 600 km on the snow between Hondarribia and Llançà (Spain) in 26 days, 22 hours and 6 minutes. García Juanes broke the Snow Walking Across Pyrenees World Record and Snow Walking Across Basque Country-Catalonia World Record. Since 01-28 to 02-06, 2020, Gabe Abrahams walked around Navarra and Cinco Villas (505 km) in 8 days, 22 hours and 10 minutes. He broke the Around Navarra and Cinco Villas World Record. In 2015 and 2016, he broke 300 miles, 500 km and 500 miles Beach Walking World Records. In 2017 and 2018, he also broke 1.000 miles Speed Walking World Record. In 2020, he has broken the Around Navarra and Cinco Villas World Record. 01-2020
International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) will now be known as World Athletics. "We’re now World Athletics", the sport’s international governing body said in their new website. "Welcome to the new World Athletics website, the place to come for all things about our wonderful sport. We’ll be bringing you new features about athletes and the sport, as well as making it easier to find the things we know you love", the official website said. "From information about our events and news about our amazing athletes, to the rules of the sport, historical stats and features to inspire you to be active, it’s all here. Over the coming months, we’ll be adding more content and continuing to improve the organization of the content". Founded in 1912 as International Amateur Athletic Federation, it changed its name to International Association of Athletics Federations in 2001 to reflect the non-amateur status of top competitors. Gabe Abrahams (Les Corts, Barcelona, Spain, 1966) is a walker and world-record holder of Multiday events (Walking, Speed Walking, Beach Walking). At 20, he walked 500 km from Toulouse (France) to Lleida (Spain), crossing Pau, France. In 2000's, he made his debut in sports like Beach Run and Nordic Walking. In January 2014, Gabe Abrahams retired from these sports and he focussed on great walks of Multiday. In August 20-29, 2015, he walked 500 km on the sand of Barcelonès County beaches (Sant Adrià de Besòs, Badalona and Barcelona) in 206 hours and 30 minutes (8 days, 14 hours and 30 minutes). He broke 300 miles and 500 km Beach Walking World Records. In June 03-24, 2016, he walked 500 miles on the sand of Barcelonès and Baix Llobregat Counties beaches (Castelldefels, Sant Adrià de Besòs, Badalona and Barcelona) in 21 days. He broke 500 miles Beach Walking World Record. Since 03-06 to 04-11, 2017, he walked with Power Walking technique 1.000 miles between La Sentiu, Gavà (Garraf), Castellbisbal and Barcelona (Barcelona Metropolitan Area) in 36 days and 5 hours. He broke the Speed Walking World Record of 1.000 miles. Since 04-20 to 05-22, 2018, he also walked with Power Walking technique 1.000 miles between Monzón and Zaragoza, on a circuit that crossed Aragon, in 32 days and 21 hours. Again, he broke the Speed Walking World Record of 1.000 miles. In 2015, Gabe Abrahams walked the greatest distance of all times on the beach (500 miles). In 2017, Abrahams also walked the greatest distance of all times with Power Walking technique (1.000 miles). 10-2019
Michael Gates (Australia) is a nordic walker and world-record holder of Ultra-Endurance and Multiday events (Nordic Walking). In 2004, he walked 2.000 km between Melbourne and Brisbane in 22 days. He broke the Across Australia World Record and Across Victoria-Queensland World Record. In 2006, Gates walked during 36 hours. He broke the Ultra-Endurance Nordic Walking World Record of 36 hours (192 km). In 2019, the 15th birthday of this great walk across Australia has been commemorated. 09-2019
Yolanda Holder (USA, 1958) is a walker and world-record holder of Multiday events (Speed Walking). In 2009, Yolanda Holder walked with Power Walking technique 77,248 km in 12 hours (Riverside, California). She broke Ultra Speed Walking World Record of 12 hours. Yolanda Holder is an ultra-walker and a 2-time Guinness World Record for “Most Marathons Completed in a Calendar Year”, finishing a staggering 106 marathons in 2010 and breaking her own record in 2012 finishing 120 marathons. In 2013, Holder broke several Ultra Speed Walking World Records: 50 miles, 100 miles, 24 hours, etc. In 2014, Yolanda Holder walked with Power Walking technique 643,737 km in 6 Days of Anchorage. She broke Multiday Speed Walking World Record of 6 days. In 2016, Yolanda Holder walked with Power Walking technique 648,565 km in 6 Days of Phoenix. She broke Multiday Speed Walking World Record of 6 days. In 2016, Holder also walked with Power Walking technique 1.001,012 km in New York. In 2017, Yolanda Holder walked with Power Walking technique 3.100 miles in New York. She broke Multiday Speed Walking World Record of 3.000 miles (50 days, 5 hours, 46 minutes and 44 seconds). In 2019, Ken Matthews (1934-2019) died at the age of 84. Matthews leaves his son, Ian, 52, and three grandchildren, Daniel, 23, Georgia, 21, and Joel, 14. Ian said: “The family is devastated by his sudden death but his fantastic achievements will never be forgotten and his historic victory in Tokyo will be chronicled in the record books in perpetuity”. Kenneth Matthews was a British race walker, who won the Olympic (1964) and European (1962) titles in the 20 km Race Walking. He took part in the 1960 Olympic Games, but failed to finish the 20 km race. In 1962 European Championships, he won the gold medal in the 20 km of Race Walking. In 1964 Olympic Games, he won the gold medal in the 20 km of Race Walking. |
